Frequently Asked Questions
Removal and Application of Hair Extensions
- Q: What length does my hair need to be?
A: For the best results, we recommend the client's hair be a minimum of 5-6 inches on the top of the head.
- Q: How are they attached to my hair? Do you use glue?
A: Fiber extensions are applied by creating a very fine braid with your hair and fiber hair that is about a quarter of an inch long. We then wrap a small piece of the divided fiber hair around the very fine braid, so the braid is protected and encased in fiber. The fiber is then sealed to itself with a heat tool that's about the temperature of a curling iron. The fiber will only seal to itself so the client's hair is never at risk. The seal resembles the plastic tip of a shoe lace.
Human hair extensions are applied by making a very small U-shaped section in the client's hair, then placing the human hair extension, which is tipped with keratin (protein) directly underneath the clients hair. The extension hair is then heated underneath with a heat tool to melt the keratin tip and while it's warm the technician rolls the two between her index finger and thumb to create a smooth seal around the client's hair and the extension. Because of the nature of the protein bond there's no glue necessary and because the bond and human hair are both composed of protein there's no damage to the client's hair.
- Q: How are they removed? Can I remove them myself?
A: The fiber extensions are easily removed by simply twisting and cracking the seal with your fingers and the extension will slide away from your hair. Due to the ease of removal of fiber extensions, they can be removed by the client.
- Because of the nature of the application of the human hair extensions the removal is a bit more involved. The technician uses a cotton strip treated with a specially formulated gel solvent that is placed on the seal of the extension. The bond (seal) then crystallizes and the technician can then break and remove the seal so it easily releases from the client's natural hair. An ethical technician would not advise their clients to attempt to remove the human hair extension method on their own because improper removal may sacrifice the integrity of the client's natural hair.
- Q: Is it difficult to match/custom blend my hair color?
A: Because of a vast array of color selections of both the human and fiber extensions, we have no problem matching and custom blending to match the client's hair color.
- Q: Do I have to pay additional for long length?
A: There's no additional charge for long length extensions, unless the client wants the length to their knees. In this case there is a small additional cost for the hair.
- Q: Can I just get volume with the extensions?
A: Yes, volume can be achieved with both methods.
- Q. Can I just get highlights with the extensions?
A: Yes, highlights can be achieved with both the fiber and human hair extension methods. As a matter of fact, it's a great way to be introduced to the hair extension service.
- Q. How long can I wear the extensions in my hair?
A: Hair extensions should not be left in the client’s hair for more than three months. After that point, it is unhealthy for the hair.
- Q. Do I have to take a break in between getting the extensions removed and then having them applied again?
A: No, you don't have to take a break in between hair extension services because the hair will be as healthy after the service as it was before the service.
- Q. Can I continue to color my hair?
A: Yes, you can continue to color your hair while wearing both types of extensions.
- Q. Can I continue to relax my hair?
A: Yes, you can continue to relax your hair while wearing both types of extensions.
- Q: Some of my own hair has come out when the extension was removed. Should I be worried?
A: No. Because the hair hasn't gone through its natural shedding process while wearing the extensions, (hair sheds 40-100 strands per day) when the extensions are removed that hair is then released. There is no need to panic as this is natural.
- Q: After the fiber has been removed, can it be reused? What about the human hair, is that reusable?
A: Because of the application method, when the seal of the fiber extensions is broken, the fiber is no longer reusable.
The human hair extensions, however, may be reusable in some cases depending upon the haircut and provided the client takes great care of the hair.
- Q: How many textures does the fiber come in?
A: Both the fiber extensions and human hair extensions are available in three textures: straight, natural, and wavy.
- Q: Are the extensions heavy?
A: Neither fiber extensions nor human hair extensions are hot or heavy, unlike weft methods.
